I looked at this topic a little bit today. I see a corelation between coal fired electricity generation in Oklahoma http://www.wrashg.org/coalplant.htm and mercury level warnings in Oklahoma lakes http://www.deq.state.ok.us/csdnew/fish/advisories.htm . Maybe more fishermen need to support clean renewable energy ?

i don't understand why algae farming is not getting the recognition it deserves. there's a complex near carlsbad, n.m. being operated by private enterprize. could it be the oil lobbiest is blocking future expansion of this proven resource?

Guy,the high mercury levels seem to be in areas of Oklahoma which have less soil cover imho . Precipitation runs off quicker in these areas. The lakes with higher mercury levels are also some of Oklahoma's clearer lakes as a result.

Then like people, it would be a reasonable assumption there is mercury either in the coal that is burned. The question to ask would then be how to remove it. One solution would be to filter the exhaust with water, removing the mercury and any other heavy metals with a flocculant, or other type of system typically used for industrial grey water before releasing it to a sanitary sewer

Something needs to be done. Business is aways worried about how cost effective anythng is.

My point is the technology already exists, isn't rocket science, and isn't that expensive

I've read articles regarding clean coal technology being too expensive for utilities to adopt.

Flocculation is not clean coal technology, it is heavy metals mitigation to remove a known heavy metal from the plant's exhaust. Processing coal into its components, burning the hydrogen, and processing the rest (The best solution) isn't really cleans coal
