Peak Oil Issues

This is a forum to address current and future issues related to peak oil."I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that." — Thomas Edison, 1931 "The term Peak Oil refers the maximum rate of the production of oil in any area under consideration, recognising that it is a finite natural resource, subject to depletion." --Colin Campbell

BOG: In my opinion global warming is a completely secondary issue. I 'm in favor of switching over to a totally renewable energy base for security, enviromental and economic reasons. If this is done then the global warming proponents aims will be attained. These same security, enviromental and economic reasons are enough in my opinion for even the most anti global warming and anti peak oil cornucopians to agree to switching over to a renewable energy base. Even if the cornucopians are correct and oil will flow like water within the OPEC states for eternity there are still enough valid reasons to stop using oil.

The Energy Entrepreneurs: Green power meets the bottom line

The following is a quote from an interesting article."Green entrepreneurs worldwide aren't waiting for new energy policies or the political will that may, one day, reduce global greenhouse emissions by some arbitrary target.

They are already working furiously to create — and capitalize on — smart ideas that produce clean, renewable energy.

These energy pioneers aren't incentivized by government dictates, nor are they making grandiose promises to revolutionize the global economy. They're simply putting innovative renewable energy ideas to work — one small step at a time.

And, yes, they're also making a few bucks along the way.

This search for innovation and profit is what underlies The Energy Entrepreneurs, a new GlobalPost video series. As our journalists are uncovering across Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East, a radical transformation of the global energy system is well underway." http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/africa/100705/green-energy-entrepreneurs-renewabl...

Peak Oil, Peak People: The Pique of Human Folly

This quote is from an excellent article on Rootspeak,"Just as establishment types are at last willing to go on record to issue Peak Oil warnings, the advance guard of Peak Oil propagandists once considered tin-foil-hat theorists have become bleakly pessimistic about the world’s ability to gingerly transition to a post-carbon economy. If we had any sense as a species (and that is doubtful at the moment) we would understand the Global Financial Crisis to be the harbinger of an insolvent Global Energy Bank and the end of the Cheap Oil Bubble that fueled industrial growth beginning with the real take-off in fossil fuel driven industrial and agricultural production after Word War II.

As this Oil Bubble deflates, so will credit, wealth and global economic production, because fossil fuels multiply human productivity by several orders of magnitude like no other resource. The reversal of the oil productivity dividend will be unrelenting and violent, as we compete on the most basic level for sca...

How the ultimate BP Gulf disaster could kill millions

This is upsetting me about the Gulf Oil Spill

I've read a few articles regarding the need to waive the Jones Act such as the following http://blog.al.com/jdcrowe/2010/06/post_1.html. Obama has not waived the Jones act as Bush did during the Katrina cleanup.

This is really getting scary. Here's a portion of the article.
"Bad news concerning the Gulf oil disaster continues to come from WMR's federal government sources in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Emergency planners are dealing with a prospective "dead zone" within a 200 mile radius from the Deepwater Horizon disaster datum in the Gulf.

A looming environmental and population displacement disaster is brewing in the Gulf. The oil dispersant used by BP, Corexit 9500, is seen by FEMA sources as mixing with evaporated water from the Gulf and absorbed by rain clouds producing toxic precipitation that threatens to continue killling marine and land animals, plant life, and humans within a 200-mile radius of the Deepwater Horizon disaster site in the Gulf.
Adding to the worries of FEMA and the Corps of Engineers is the large amounts of methane that are escaping from the cavernous grotto of oil underneath the Macondo drilling area of Gulf of Mexi...

ON THE GULF OF MEXICO – The deadly blowout of an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico was triggered by a bubble of methane gas that escaped from the well and shot up the drill column, expanding quickly as it burst through several seals and barriers before exploding, according to interviews with rig workers conducted during BP's internal investigation.

While the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, the sequence of events described in the interviews provides the most detailed account of the April 20 blast that killed 11 workers and touched off the underwater gusher that has poured more than 3 million gallons of crude into the

I think Obama pragmatically decided in the past to allow more coastal drilling strictly because our country had no other choice. Our country is currently importing 2/3's of the oil it uses which negatively impacts both our economy and national security. As a result of this disaster there will be more safeguards set up to prevent future enviromental and economic disasters . Drilling will have to continue in some form offshore. IMHO the primary result of this disaster will be an increased push in congress for renewable

Common Sense in Energy Storage Investing

Here's a quote from this excellent article. "Last week I described cleantech as "an ethical system based on the responsible application of technology to optimize the use of natural resources and increase the well-being of the six billion people that live on this planet." It all boils down to using every available resource for its highest and best purpose; and that's where storage becomes a critical enabling technology. It can reduce waste in transportation by capturing braking energy for immediate reuse. It can reduce waste in wind and solar power by smoothing out inherent variability. It can reduce waste in the power grid by smoothing out load fluctuations and potentially shifting power from when it's produced to when it's needed. In short, storage is the beating heart of cleantech and an investment mega-trend that will probably outlive us all. Storage is not, however, a silver bullet that can solve all of humanity's problems." Here's a link to the full article.

Here's some quotes regarding this issue..."EVs and hybrids are threatening to make the U.S. dependent on another dangerous foreign resource source -- China. Hybrids use twice the lanthanides as standard vehicles, and China controls 95 percent of lanthanide deposits. (Source: Toyota)" and "China outguessed the U.S. and now stands to reap the rewards. Expert Robert Bryce estimates it will take 10 to 15 years for the U.S. to begin to tap its own lanthanide deposits.
Britain faces 'oil crunch' within five years, Richard Branson warns - Telegraph

It said the challenges facing the UK would exceed those presented by the financial crisis and said the poorest in society were most vulnerable to potentially significant increases.

The report said Government must acknowledge the risks to the economy and to produce contingency plans for transport, retail, agriculture and alternative power.

'Unless we do so, we face a situation during the term of the next government where fuel price unrest could lead to shortages in consumer products and the UK's energy security will be significantly compromised,'' it said.

Ridgetop Nimbyism

I just got back from a short vacation. While I was on vacation I drove Talimena drive http://www.talimenascenicdrive.com/ from Oklahoma into Arkansas with my family. The wind potential of some of this mountain ridge is obvious imho due to the readily apparent dwarfing of the trees along certain segments of this ridge.I believe the dwarfing of trees must be due to the wind since on other areas of the ridgetop the trees aren't as dwarfed. The trees are much more dwarfed than in areas of western Oklahoma I'm familiar with where wind turbines have already proven their economic potential. As we drove along I began to visualize long lines of turbines along similar ridgetops providing electricity and economic development . I've read since returning home that local nimbyist groups are delaying implimentation of ridgetop wind turbine projects in other areas of the USA.. http://www.wind-watch.org/news/2009/12/03/groups-try-to-slow-wind-energy-project-over-potential-harm-to-bat...

we should assume the Earth also is capable of generating hydrocarbons

thttp://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=47159

Our hinking agrees with that of Cornell astronomer Thomas Gold, who in his 1998 book, "The Deep Hot Biosphere: The Myth of Fossil Fuels," argued that hydrocarbons are formed naturally in our planetary system and beyond. Dr. Gold noted that Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune have large admixtures of hydrocarbons in their atmospheres, chiefly in the form of hydrocarbons, mainly methane. He commented that Titan, a moon of Saturn, has clouds formed of methane and ethane. Dr. Gold doubted that there ever were "stagnant swamps" or dinosaurs on Titan. If hydrocarbons could be formed naturally on other planets, Dr. Gold argued we should assume the Earth also is capable of generating hydrocarbons without the need for the debris of photosynthesized life to decay into oil.

Can the Southwest go local?

I found this quote from a recent article I read to be in total agreement with my own thoughts. "I'm still betting that trillions of dollars will be spent over the coming decades to cut waste, build more wind turbines and solar plants, erect a long distance HVDC transmission grid, implement a smart grid with micro-islanding capabilities, stimulate a rail renaissance, and try to keep the American machine humming.

That's why I call it "the greatest investment event of the century." The investment opportunity in the Southwest is absolutely staggering, if the capital can be found.

But should those efforts prove too little, too late — and by my count, we're already 30 years too late — the long-term fate of individual communities will be largely decided by what they do in the next two decades. What they have at the end of that period may be what they'll have to live with for many decades afterward. The resources they depend on today may be stranded.

My family may indeed fall back on the o...
